While Copenhagen is definitely the main destination of Denmark, other cities are interesting and fascinating. And while it features rather flat plains and does not have fjords and frozen mountains like the Scandinavian countries, Denmark makes up with exceptional urban and cultural destinations, making it a nice place to explore and discover.
Denmark might not be at the front of the list when it comes to naming the most famous or popular travel destinations in the world, but that is fine for the small country of northern Europe, as it can pretty much retain its special charm and that Nordic atmosphere that so many people fall in love with. Once the land of Vikings, Denmark is today one of the strongest countries of the world regarding its economical, political and social environments. Stranded north of Germany, Denmark is composed of the Jutland Peninsula and many islands, the biggest and most important being Zealand and Funen.
The most important and interesting places to see in Denmark are the cities and any traveler should start with the charming capital of Copenhagen. While being a major European capital, the city is still small enough to be elegant and intimate, with many things to see and do, apart from the unbelievable atmosphere. Apart from the vivid cultural scene, vibrant nightlife, great shopping and excellent cuisine, the main sights of Copenhagen are packed into its small historical center, with interesting museums, many royal palaces, cathedrals and other monuments. The best places to visit in the city include Rosenborg Palace, Tivoli Gardens, Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace with the Parliament, City Hall, National Museum, National Gallery of Denmark, the Round Tower, the Little Mermaid, Experimentarium and many other museums, cathedrals and monuments.
While Copenhagen is definitely the main destination of Denmark, other cities are interesting and fascinating. Some great examples include the historically rich but also fun Aalborg, Arhus and its open air museum, the medieval gem of Ribe, Odense, Randers, Kalundborg, Roskilde and many others.
Denmark might also be the best place to retrace the history of the Vikings, with many monuments and events to remind of the fearsome bunch. While not many, Denmark also features several excellent natural destinations, like the three national parks of Thy, Mols Bjerge and Wadden Sea, internationally known as a resting place for millions of migratory birds. Among the beautiful natural landscapes of Denmark we can include Bornholm island, Zealand island and Mons Cliffs.
