Paris is renowned for its classical architecture and town planning. In the early 1600s, Parisian architecture began to evolve its own style when uniqueness and grace were added to the regularity and proportion of the Ancient and Renaissance styles. And then in 1853, Emperor Napoleon III commissioned Georges-Eugène Haussmann to demolish the old overcrowded and unhealthy areas of Paris, and replace them with wide avenues, parks and squares, symmetrically centered on the Arc du Triomphe. The Arc de Triomphe is positioned in the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle's large roundabout at the western end of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.
