Traveling in Hong Kong

With a population of over seven million it is easily one of Asia's biggest cities, but at least two-thirds of Hong Kong is not developed, providing ample space to relax at a quiet beach resort or enjoy some hiking and mountain-biking. First time visitors to Hong Kong will delight at the stunning contrast between the city's two most visible and distinctive characteristics: the dense urban neighborhoods of soaring skyscrapers, and the jagged mountains and lush, tropical climate. Rising over five hundred meters from the sea, Victoria Peak is perched right alongside Hong Kong's tightly-clustered residential towers and office blocks, and it draws seven million visitors per year; hike or take a tram to the summit and enjoy priceless panoramic views of the surrounding city laid out below (such as the photo above).

Much of what lures people to Hong Kong lies in the city's renowned shopping, delectable cuisine, and exciting nightlife. Hong Kong has no shortage of shopping malls, many of which are occupied by every global luxury brand. Top malls in the city include The Landmark, IFC Mall, and Pacific Place. The city also offers outdoor, night, and specialty markets, such as a flower market and even a goldfish market. Because there is no sales tax or VAT, big ticket items like cameras, computers, and high-end wrist watches are especially popular with visitors. A lively and thriving restaurant and bar scene makes Hong Kong a top choice for young professionals and cosmopolitan tourists.

Other popular attractions in Hong Kong include the Happy Valley Racecourse (which offers night time races on Wednesdays) and the historic Man Ro Temple, built in 1847. Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade is one of the best places in the city to walk along the waterfront and take in the expansive views of the city, and the neon lights at night are especially brilliant. Don't forget to experience the Star Ferry, an iconic Hong Kong attraction offering a quick and scenic way to get from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island at a reasonable fare.

Hong Kong and the surrounding area offer various themed attractions such as Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, located on Lantau Island, and the nearby gambling destination of Macau. As with any world-class city, Hong Kong has no shortage of luxury accommodations, featuring landmark brands like Mandarin Oriental and Shangri-La as well as Ritz Carlton and other five-star hotels. Mid-range hotels are plentiful and for those that don't mind slightly cramped spaces, Hong Kong has no shortage of budget accommodations and guest houses at reasonable rates. With such a wide variety of sights, attractions, and accommodations, Hong Kong has something to offer every visitor.
