Traveling in New Zealand

New Zealand consists of two large principal islands, referred to simply as South Island and North Island. North Island is where the largest city of Auckland is located. Home to over one million people, Auckland offers a cosmopolitan urban experience without the headaches and annoyances of a larger and more crowded city. The Auckland Museum is one of the city's top attractions, and it houses a fascinating collection of Pacific Island and Maori artifacts, in addition to exhibits related to New Zealand's volcanic formations. There is also a National Maritime Museum as well as a Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland.

The Sky Tower is another popular attraction, and as the tallest freestanding tower in the Southern Hemisphere, the panoramic views of the surrounding area are unforgettable. There is also a revolving restaurant as well as cable jumping from the tower. For wildlife and wilderness adventures, head to Tiritiri Matangi Island for some excellent bird-watching, enjoy the spectacular hiking at the Waitakere Ranges, or go kayaking or fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. Outside of Auckland, the Waitomo Caves provide visitors with a spelunking adventure that is always sure to please. Also located on the North Island is Lake Rotorua, which is home to a cluster of volcanic geysers and hot springs.

The South Island is less populated but still offers a number of amazing sights and attractions. The Abel Tasman National Park is one of the most beautiful destinations in New Zealand, with pristine beaches and sparking, crystalline waters. This is an especially popular place for camping, kayaking, and fishing. The nearby city of Nelson offers a thriving arts, cultural, and culinary scene, and some of the country's best wines come from this region. On the southern end of the island is the Milford Sound, a mystical, picture-perfect place that never fails to impress.

Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island and the second largest in the country; it also offers various cultural and recreational attractions and makes for an excellent base to explore the rest of the island.

Tourists arriving from overseas will arrive at Auckland's international airport, which offers flights to Asia and the United States with continuing service to Europe and beyond. Traveling in from the North Island to the South Island is most convenient by air, and buses are a safe and affordable way to travel around the country. Although accommodations can be expensive during the high season, budget hotels and hostels are consistently safe and clean. Those looking for more luxurious accommodations will have no shortage, as high-end lodges and resorts can be found all over New Zealand - just use the search below. No matter what kind of adventure you are looking to find in New Zealand, there's no doubt that you'll be able to find it.
