Traveling in Sweden

Sweden is one of the Scandinavian countries of Europe, located in the northern part of the continent, usually thought of as always covered in snow, but actually large portions are mostly green. Sweden is also one of the most peaceful countries in the world, recognized for its high standard of living and the housing of the Nobel prizes. Its travel destinations are many and diverse, from natural to cultural and beyond.

First of all, most travelers who choose Sweden as a destination, at first end up in the major cities, many of them excellent places to discover. Stockholm, the capital, is one of the most enchanting European cities, spread around several islands that are connected by bridges and give the city a unique character. The main attractions and landmarks of the city are located inside the Old Town, including the exceptional architecture of the City Hall and other old buildings dating back up until the 13th century, the beautiful waterfront Royal Palace, Riddarholmskyrkan church, Vasa and Skansen museums, Nobel Museum, National Museum, Stockholm Cathedral, German Church and many others. Part of the charm is also given by the nearby Stockholm Archipelago, one of the most beautiful in the world.

Other interesting urban destinations in Sweden include the cities of Gothenburg, Malmo, Jonkoping and Uppsala.

While there are many places to see and explore, the best known and most popular include the National Parks in Lapland, an endless mountainous area in the northern part of the country, inhabited by the Sami people and their huge reindeer herds. This is also one of the best places in the world to watch the Northern Lights (pictured below).

Apart from these destinations, Sweden is a great country to try a series of exciting adventures, from skiing and cross-country, to fishing and boating, from uncovering the remains of the Viking culture, to trying the unique gastronomy. The islands of the Baltic Sea are fascinating places too, both naturally and culturally. Gotland, Tjörn, Orust, Oland and several others feature old authentic villages and towns, as well as protected natural areas.
